The advent of AI is bringing large transformational changes in the industry, from automating manual tasks to increasing the speed of output. With a growing population, the world is now, more than ever, looking for ways to increase production. Fast fashion, shorter hold times and a growing youth are leading consumers to want more choices and more control of what they own. From electronics to clothes, the manufacturing industry will need to change the way it’s working to keep up with the pace.
It’s a hard task on its own, but with AI and the way technology is evolving, it’s something that can be achieved. What took two years to create a decade ago can now be done through 3D printers in the lab in a week.
Now is the time to enhance the quality and volume.
This article focuses on the evolutions in AI and how they affect the manufacturing industry. From Internet of Things (IoT) enablement on the production floor and visual analytics to text-to-video generation and upskilling, this article curates the journey of the future of manufacturing through AI.
The Internet Of Things And Robotics
Through the use of Internet of Things devices, an entire factory’s data can be collated, stored and nurtured to understand inefficiencies and quality drops to prevent delays and foster growth. Some companies are providing AI tools that allow you to visualize your manufacturing floor, starting from raw material inventory to, for example, weaving, stitching, dyeing, washing and quality assurance (QA) in a textile factory. With AI, you can analyze the data flow to understand where you need to enhance productivity and reduce human error. Once gaps are detected, automated robots can be put into place and taught simple things such as stitching, cutting and moving items.
Video Analytics And Quality Control
With AI-enabled video analytics, you can enhance your QA function, improving output efficiency and reducing wastage. Companies are offering AI-based systems that can enhance quality control through defect detection, worker rate comparisons and efficiency analyses and final product quality checks. Print quality checks and defect checks can also be automated.
Text-To-Video AI And Upskilling
A move to further efficiency requires upskilling your labor force so they aren’t doing redundant work but rather thoughtful work. AI is evolving fast, with OpenAI releasing new models like Sora, a text-to-video tool that teaches AI to understand the physical world in motion. These kinds of tools will also enable better training and upskilling for the labor force. Imagine if you can create immersive training for your employees that’s both entertaining and highly informative—this could lead to productivity gains with minimum investment.
The entrepreneurs of tomorrow will need to sustain a talented and motivated high-productivity team that can engineer processes and then optimize the output along the way. Going forward, AI will play a pivotal role in defining what companies will come out advantageous. Enterprises that iteratively improve and continuously learn will be the ones that lead the way. Through the AI tools discussed here and many more on the horizon, AI will enable the companies of tomorrow to leverage their technology and people to build better things for a safer and more prosperous world.
