Future via Getty ImagesYouTube serves as a vast repository of videos spanning diverse topics such as cooking, DIY, and education. However, the platform occasionally presents challenges, as videos can be lengthy or obscure vital details within their content.
In a recent update shared by Google, Bard AI expanded its understanding of YouTube videos. Google’s generative AI LLM is now equipped to respond to specific inquiries directly related to the content of a video, allowing users to ask Bard questions about a certain video. It can also summarize a video simply by inputing the YouTube URL.
An example provided was the ability to inquire about specific details within a video, such as the number of eggs required in a recipe within the first video when searching for content related to making olive oil cake.
The recent upgrade marks an important step for Bard, moving beyond its initial function, which primarily allowed users to search for specific videos with the LLM. Now, the chatbot is capable of providing detailed responses to queries associated with the video’s content. For instance, users can engage Bard to obtain specific details within a video.
This development coincides with YouTube’s own endeavors in harnessing generative AI features, including an AI conversational tool that offers real-time responses to users’ inquiries about video content.
This recent enhancement marks a considerable shift for the YouTube extension, which previously functioned primarily as a conversational video search tool. In September, Google rolled out Bard Extensions, but the AI’s capabilities were quite limited, only allowing users to open a video from a chat.
Describing the new update, Google mentioned that it’s an initial stage in Bard’s capability to understand YouTube video content, allowing for more insightful conversations around it. YouTube has introduced a feature designed to distill key topics from video comments using generative AI, providing users a comprehensive view of the discussions unfolding around the video content.
This development coincides with YouTube’s independent testing of a feature that allows users to ask questions about videos. This experimental features are currently exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers.
From initial observations, it appears that Bard’s new YouTube abilities are accessible to all Bard users, suggesting that it has transitioned from a testing phase to general availability.
