As the demand for massage equipment continues to grow to nearly $16 billion by 2032, new technological innovations emerge as a promising alternative or complement to human-delivered therapy. As some people prefer not to be touched or face other barriers to accessing traditional services, these innovations can help more people enjoy the therapeutic benefits of massage in a new and comfortable manner.
Massage therapy has been practiced for centuries and can offer a variety of benefits. Still, traditional massage therapy may not be suitable for everyone. Advancements in robotics and AI are revolutionizing the wellness industry to help overcome some of these challenges. They offer innovative solutions to address the diverse needs of those who seek alternative forms of massage. Here are some ways technology is improving the massage experience.
Robotics
Massage is a complex system of techniques designed to relax muscles and relieve tension. Take lymph drainage, for example. It involves specific algorithms of movements that must be executed correctly to achieve safe and effective tissue drainage.
Massage performed by unskilled people may cause more harm if not applied correctly, and the same applies to home devices such as massage guns. While they can provide some relief and benefit, they cannot replicate the full efficacy of treatment by a trained professional.
Robotic massagers represent a different approach. They replicate techniques from traditional therapy using sophisticated sensors and algorithms that analyze the body and determine the most suitable actions for patients. This technology offers a promising alternative to human-based therapies.
For example, Flexiv has integrated a soft silicone heated massage tool into its Rizon 4 robotic arm. This system utilizes computer vision and AI to pinpoint the patient’s spine and key muscle groups, replicating the techniques of Chinese deep tissue massage and dynamically adjusting settings throughout the procedure.
My company, Robosculptor, offers an autonomous robotic system specifically designed for precise aesthetic treatments. AI-powered software instantly recognizes body contours and tailors personalized protocols for patients. The system is equipped with a manipulator arm, adjustable couch and flexible spheres to ensure comfort and efficacy.
The development of such technologies is an important step for the market. Robotics can improve massage quality by delivering precise and customizable mechanical stimulation to the body in a controlled environment, and research indicates that it can offer physical and mental health benefits. Beyond that, it can compensate for the shortage of skilled workers across the globe.
Augmented Reality
Another fascinating application of AI in massage can be seen through augmented reality (AR). Gharieni, a spa equipment manufacturer, has developed a massage table integrated with sensors that monitor the therapist’s movements in real time, capturing details like position and speed. Using this data, Gharieni’s AI program generates dynamic music or soothing sounds, synchronizing with the therapist’s actions. This creates an interactive experience that helps customers to immerse themselves and relax more effectively.
Research further indicates that AR can move manual therapy to the next level. While masseuses act through touch, technologies can positively affect other senses such as hearing. This, in turn, can inspire trust and an increased level of calm among clients.
Virtual Reality
Another way to improve the massage experience is by using virtual reality (VR) technologies. Before its closure due to the pandemic, Esqapes pioneered the idea of VR-augmented massage centers where customers could experience various virtual environments during their massage. The company utilized a blend of proprietary software, VR hardware, automated massage programs and conventional wellness techniques.
With advancements like the Apple Vision Pro, the industry may continue to evolve and expand in this direction. I believe that in the future, individuals may be able to immerse themselves in virtual environments to receive simulated massage. These experiences will likely be customized to individual preferences, offering a sensory-rich alternative to traditional therapy.
The Future Of Tech In Massage Therapy
Massage therapy is a rapidly evolving field. It is less conservative and regulated than other parts of medicine, making players more willing to adopt innovations. The global massage equipment market was valued at $10.11 billion in 2023 and is poised to reach $22.47 billion within the next seven years with a CAGR of 10.5%.
This growth presents a variety of new opportunities for the industry. Spas, massage salons and manual therapy clinics can innovate and strategize to provide higher quality services to their clients, expanding their audience and potentially reducing cost. In turn, this growing demand can help boost the profits of robotics manufacturers in the industry.
However, a lack of funding is currently one of the biggest challenges hindering research and development of innovative solutions in the robotic massage market, as these are resource-intensive processes. Even as more investors become interested in robotics, they tend to wait until the company becomes market-driven and can show actual customers to support it due to the high costs of products in the field and the large investments required.
On the other hand, market growth can lead to more fierce competition between startups for both funding and skilled workers. This may be one of the key challenges for robotics developers, especially in the U.S., which faces unprecedented labor shortages. According to the latest data from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, there are currently 8.5 million job openings in the country and only 6.5 million unemployed workers. It’s important for key players in the industry to promote collaboration to share resources and knowledge, helping to reduce competition for funding and enabling more rapid technological advancements.
The integration of advanced technologies in massage therapy is set to transform the industry. As the market continues to grow, I believe those who begin planning how they might adapt and invest in these advancements will be well-positioned for what the future holds.
