Amazon has launched a new AI image, text and video model as it aims to compete with the likes of OpenAI and Grok.
Nova Canvas can create and edit images using natural language text inputs, and Nova Reel can provide what the company describes as “studio-quality” video, with features such as camera motion control, 360-degree rotation, and zoom.
Speaking at Amazon re:Invent, CEO Andy Jassy said the company intends to launch a Speech-to-Speech generation model in early 2025, followed by an “Any-to-Any” model later in the year.
Both Amazon Nova models have been integrated with Amazon Bedrock, the company’s fully AI managed service. It allows users to easily experiment with and evaluate Amazon Nova models, as well as other FMs, to determine the best model for an application, said the company.
Amazon Nova Canvasis described as a state-of-the-art image generation model that creates professional grade images from text or images provided in prompts. It also provides features that can be used to edit images via text inputs, and provides controls for adjusting colour scheme and layout, said Amazon.
The model comes with built-in controls to support safe and responsible AI use, such as watermarking, which allows the source of an image to always be traced, and content moderation, which limits the generation of potentially harmful content.
Amazon Nova Reel is a video generation model that enables users to easily create high-quality video from text and images. Natural language prompts can control visual style and pacing, including camera motion, rotation, and zooming, said Amazon. It also includes watermarking and content moderation.
Amazon Nova Reel currently generates six-second videos, and will support the generation of videos of up to two-minutes in length in the coming months, added the company.
“Inside Amazon, we have about 1,000 generative AI applications in motion, and we’ve had a bird’s-eye view of what application builders are still grappling with,” said Rohit Prasad, SVP of Amazon Artificial General Intelligence. “Our new Amazon Nova models are intended to help with these challenges for internal and external builders, and provide compelling intelligence and content generation while also delivering meaningful progress on latency, cost-effectiveness, customisation, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), and agentic capabilities.”
