Korea Telecom (KT) recently unveiled the Genie TV Set-Top Box 4, believed to be the world’s first IPTV set-top box that supports 8K resolution and features on-device AI capabilities.
The set-top box is equipped with an 8K UHD chipset, offering four times the number of pixels of a 4K UHD screen and 16 times that of a full HD screen
It includes a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) that optimises both image and sound quality based on learned viewing data. This means it can provide a customised viewing experience by adjusting brightness, enhancing dialogue clarity, and even turning on the TV automatically when a user returns home.
The AI-based upscaling technology allows real-time broadcasts, OTT video, and YouTube content to be viewed in ultra-high-definition, even if the original content is in full HD or 4K. It also includes features like AI Quick View to find specific scenes and AI Sign Language for real-time interpretation during emergency broadcasts.
KT aims to evolve this set-top box into an AI hub that connects customers with AI, enhancing the overall viewing and smart home experience.
In terms of Smart Home Integration, the device can control other smart home appliances through voice commands, making it a central hub for smart home environments.
