F1 Unveils AI-Generated Trophy for Montreal Grand Prix Winner Created by Amazon

Formula One will award the winner of Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix with the first-ever trophy designed using artificial intelligence (AI), in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The AI-generated trophy, inspired by the aerodynamic design of F1 cars, was unveiled on the eve of the Montreal race.

How AWS Created the AI Trophy
The design process involved AWS exploring a range of traditional trophy designs before applying generative AI to create a truly unique award. AWS designers utilized the Amazon Titan Image Generator and Amazon Bedrock to generate hundreds of trophy concepts in seconds.

AWS incorporated data from the development of the 2022 series F1 cars into the design, including the aerodynamic design of the cars and specific details related to Montreal, such as the iconic maple leaf and the St. Lawrence River.

The 2D design was then transformed into a 3D model and then 3D printed. Once the design was finalized, a UK-based silversmith meticulously crafted the trophy, merging cutting-edge technology with the rich traditions of Formula One.

Formula One Embraces AI
The use of AI in Formula One extends beyond trophy design. The sport has announced further projects that will leverage AI technology. A notable example is the Statbot tool, designed to help Formula One analyze historical data from its archives.

This tool will provide the broadcast team with near-instantaneous access to facts and statistics, significantly improving the speed and accuracy of information during race weekends.

"For over six years, AWS has been an invaluable partner, revolutionizing the use of data to enhance how we operate across the sport," Emily Prazer, Chief Commercial Officer of Formula 1 said in a statement.

Furthermore, Formula One is collaborating with AWS to apply generative AI for root cause analysis (RCA), F1Technical reports. This technology will help identify and address the underlying causes of technological issues during races more efficiently, ensuring minimal downtime and a seamless experience for all involved.

Neil Ralph, Principal Sports Industry Specialist at AWS, emphasized the impact of this collaboration: "With AWS’s generative AI capabilities, F1 will elevate its storytelling as historical data is effortlessly analyzed alongside real-time events to engage fans with more dynamic and timely commentary."
