Google Tests Community-Sourced Notes In Search

Google is testing a feature that allows people to add
notes to search results for anyone to see. The goal is to make results more helpful by providing a human perspective like feedback on recipes or tips on travel.
The community sourced Notes is available as an opt-in feature in Google’s Search Labs, where Google tests
new features that may or may not make it to its search engine.
A Notes button, for those who are enrolled in Labs, will appear in Search and Discover. Tapping it will surface all the insights
other people have shared about an article.
When someone visits a helpful page, they can create a note to share their experience on the topic or article. The note can be customized with text,
stickers and photos, and you can pick from different visual styles to make it feel like your own.

Quality and safety remain critical as Google experiments with this new capability, Brad
Kellett, senior director of search, wrote in a post.
“We’re using a combination of algorithmic protections and human moderation to make sure notes are as safe, helpful and relevant
as possible, and to protect against harmful or abusive content,” Kellett explains. “As with all Labs experiments, we’ll use this time to test and learn what works best for users
before bringing these capabilities to a broader audience on Search.”
A lot of trust has gone into developing this
feature and putting it out there for anyone to use. In the U.S., Google will soon launch the ability to add imaged generated by artificial intelligence (AI), but it’s not completely clear how
Google will control misinformation, especially with the inclusion of synthetic images.
The company also wants to let site owners add notes to their own pages.
