Google is rolling out its new search feature — Search Generative Experience — to 120 countries after its pilot in the US, India and Japan. The new feature is powered by Google Bard AI and aims to compete with the Microsoft Bing AI that talks to people and offers them answers and information. Although unlike Bing AI, Google’s Search Generative Experience is aimed at surfacing only the information. The conversation part is still limited to Bard, which is a separate product from Google Search.
Earlier, Google had piloted the Search Generative Experience in the US, India and Japan. It is important to note that even though the feature is now rolling out in 120 countries it is only going to be available to users who have opted into using Search Lab. In other words, if you want AI answers to your Google queries, here is what you should do:
Step 1: Visit labs.Google.com
Step 2: Go to Google Search part and select “Get Started”
Step 3: Toggle the button for SGE
Google says that once the toggle is on, in response to many of your Google search queries, you will get the answers and information right on the search page. This information will be pulled and collated by Google using its AI systems, most likely Bard. Although the company has newer and more powerful AI systems — most notably Gemini — also in the works.
“Starting today, we’re bringing Search Labs and SGE in English to more than 120 new countries and territories around the world, including Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa,” Google’s Hema Budaraju noted in a company blog. “As part of this expansion, we’re also enabling four new languages for everyone using SGE: Spanish, Portuguese, Korean and Indonesian.”
With AI increasingly fused with search engines — Microsoft has Bing AI, and Google is using Bard — in future most people will find that their search experience will change. Instead of people having to click on a link to get the right information, or clicking link after link in search of appropriate answers, they may start getting the information directly on the search page.
Google says that its testing shows that Search Generative Experience is popular among many users. “We’ve learned from testing generative AI in Search that people appreciate the ability to ask follow-up questions, because it’s a more natural way to seek information or dig deeper on a topic,” said Hema. “Now, we’re experimenting with a new way for you to ask follow-up questions directly from the search results page.”
